I just stumbled across this slideshow of the 15 best sandwiches with culture on the Chicago Tribune’s website.  The sandwich pictured above is called a Po’ boy, which I had never heard of until now.  It’s basically a sub from Louisana with deep-fried meat or seafood on Louisana French Bread, which is apparently the key to the sandwich.  As a sandwich lover, this slideshow was right up my alley but left me extremely disappointed/annoyed on 2 fronts:
1) The Philly cheese steak was omitted.  This is totally unacceptable.  It is one of the greatest sandwiches of all time.  I know the list is ‘sandwiches with culture’ but if the grilled cheese can make it, the Philly cheese steak should as well.  I had one last summer at the iconic White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City (not Philly but close enough) and it was epic.  I ordered the large which was essentially 2 foot long subs.  I did not finish both.  I did get the meat sweats.
2) The list is blatantly anti-semitic.  They have something called a ‘middle eastern sandwich’ which includes meatballs.  Would it have been so difficult to include falafel? It’s a wonderful Israeli treat. It’s not even exclusively Israeli.  If nothing else, I would have been happy if they went with Montreal Smoked Meat, which is de facto Jewish.  Alas, not.
And now I’m hungry for a second lunch.
