I was just going through this slideshow of Sports Illustrated’s Best Covers of the 1990s. There are some real gems in there, but the one above from February 1997 really captures a degree of homoeroticism you just don’t see in sports today. When you consider how the fates of Jeter and A-Rod have gone over the past 12 years, it adds to the overall awesomeness of the cover.
Who could have known that at some point these two incredible shortstop prospects would comprise one half of the infield for a team that couldn’t even make the playoffs? Couple that with the fact that A-Rod has vastly superior stats but Jeter is universally loved and regarded as a winner and you get an extremely compelling retrospective SI cover.
Oh ya, A-Rod’s single white female obsession with Jeter is quite possibly the best part of the whole thing.
